When clustering points, OpenLayers replaces the vector features with clustered features. Thus, the usual method of doing per-geometry styles doesn't work. Instead, it is necessary to use "symbolizers" and pass extra style context with definitions for expanding the symbolizers. See this openflights.org blog post for a complete example.
